The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is waiting for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to resign so that SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa can take over as Prime Minister of the new government, MP Dinesh Gunawardena said.
Addressing a joint press conference this morning (11), Gunawardena said that if Wickremesinghe values democracy, he has to step down as Prime Minister.
This was prior to a statement released by Wickremesinghe later this afternoon that he would, in fact, resign tomorrow.
“Gotabaya Rajapaksa has had wide support running across the country. It is up to the Government and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to accept defeat and hand over the Government. We wait for Ranil Wickremesinghe to respect the mandate and resign so that Mahinda Rajapaksa can be appointed Prime Minister. Already nine Ministers have resigned from the Cabinet. Why is he clinging on to his post? He has to go home if he values democracy. That is what we ask for,” Gunawardena said.
MP Wimal Weerawansa, meanwhile, said the new government will also take immediate action against those accused of corruption in the Yahapalana government, after conducting proper investigations.
“There are several accusations that the Wickremesinghe-led government misused its power. If those accusations are proved to be true we will take action against relevant parties. Former President Maithripala Sirisena himself appointed a commission to probe corruption in the present government. Sajith Premadasa was accused of misusing public money. Rajitha Senaratne and Akila Viraj Kariyawasam have also been accused. If those allegations are true we will take immediate action against them,” Weerawansa said.
