We can prove Gota has renounced US citizenship – G. L.
Accusing the Government of making baseless allegations against its presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) claimed today that it is in possession of proof that Rajapaksa has successfully renounced his US citizenship.
Speaking to journalists at the party headquarters, SLPP Chairman Prof G. L. Peiris said some members of the Government are making these allegations against Rajapaksa as his candidacy has proved to be a major challenge to them in the run-up to the upcoming presidential election.
Insisting that he can prove that Rajapaksa has indeed renounced his highly contested US citizenship, Prof Peiris said all relevant paperwork is in order.
“They say that there are legal barriers for Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be a presidential candidate as he still hasn’t renounced his American citizenship. This is an utter lie, and we can prove that it’s a lie. On 17 April, Rajapaksa presented all the required documents to the US State Department, which has conveyed its acceptance of his documents,” he said.
“We are in possession of all these documents,” he added. However, he did not produce any of the documents to the media covering the press conference.
The SLPP Chairman further said that the United National Party (UNP) is attempting to mislead the public with its unfounded allegations.
“They say his name doesn’t appear in the list of names produced by the State Department of those who have renounced the citizenship. Appearing on that list is not a requirement to renounce American citizenship. It cannot be used as a measurement to renounce citizenship,” said Prof Peiris.
