The current administration has done more for the country’s armed forces than those looking to ride into power on the backs of war heroes, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera told Parliament today.
“We have done for the forces what those claiming to espouse patriotism couldn’t do in 20 years,” he said.
Highlighting the various steps taken by the Government to uplift the professional lives of the country’s military servicemen and women, Samaraweera said uniformed staff of the tri-forces saw an increase of rations up to to Rs. 23,231 in January 2019.
Other allowances were also increased up to Rs. 19,350, he said, adding that rent allowance doubled while commando allowances for all three forces was increased from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000. A Good Conduct allowance was also introduced from this month onward, he said, adding that uniform allowance too has seen an increase.
“We treat the armed forces as a professional outfit, instead of exploiting them for political gain,” said the Minister.
