With 246 new cases, Brandix cluster now at 567: officials

ECONOMYNEXT – The number of COVID-19 positive cases detected at the Brandix plant at Minuwangoda has risen to 739, with 418 new patients identified moments ago, the National Operating Centre for Preventing COVID-19 (NOCPOC) told Economy Next.
A spokesman for the taskforce said tests are on-going in the factory which employes over 1,200 full-time staff.
NOCPOC said all 739 confirmed cases are personnel from the Brandix plant which the first patient was found, adding that the figure will likely go further up.
Medical personnel have conducted thousands of PCR tests in the Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya and Veyangoda areas over the past 24 hours.
As some of the Brandix staff had gone home on holidays during the long weekend cases have been detected in a number of cities and towns across the country.
Cases have been reported from Jaffna, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Katana Seeduwa, Divulapitiya, Meerigama, Jaela and Mahara.
Quarantine curfews which were upgraded to police curfews this afternoon are in force in the Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya and Veyangoda police divisions after a community outbreak of COVID-19 was confirmed late Saturday night.
The first person discovered with the infection is a 39-year old supervisor in the Brandix plant a mother of three children. Her oldest child, a 16-year-old girl, has tested positive although her husband and the younger children have tested negative. (Colombo/Oct6/2020)
