The Court of Appeal has dismissed the writ application filed by Sharmila Gonawela seeking a writ of quo warranto against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Gonawela, a Podujana Peramuna Colombo Municipal Councillor, had contended that Wickremesinghe owns shares in companies that are receiving business from government agencies.
The Court of Appeal upheld the preliminary objections raised on behalf of the respondents, that jurisdiction of the court had not been properly invoked.
Uditha Egalahewa PC with Ashokbaran appeared for the Petitioner.
K Kanag-Isvaran PC with Suren Fernando and N. Arulpragasam appeared for the Prime Minister
Suren Fernando with Khyati Wikramanayake appeared for the UNP General Secretary
Vikum de Abrew appeared for the Bank of Ceylon.
Had Wickremesinghe had lost the case, he would’ve ceased to be a Member of Parliament and, therefore, would’ve had to step down as Prime Minister.
