ECONOMYNEXT- Former MP Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa is questioning whether the government is trying to cover-up the COVID-19 death count by attributing deaths caused by the pandemic to other reasons for death.

Speaking to reporters this morning, April 6, the politician who now is a nominee from the Sajith Premadasa-led Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) inquired about the cause of death of the soldier who died collapsing at the Dambulla bus terminal two days ago.

“Some say its epilepsy, I don’t think a solider could ever die due to epilepsy since they are subjected to a complete medical checkup and their fitness is tested,” he said.

He said that the government tried to keep the death count to 7 but now it has risen to 9.

“We can see that the government is trying to cover up the death count by giving various reason such as kidney failure, leptospirosis, heart diseases and epilepsy,” he added.

A Naval officer who died at the Welisara Navy camp as hundreds of sailors were diagnosed with COVID 19, was said to have passed away from leptospirosis or Rat fever.

According to Army Commander Lt General Shavendra Silva, the solider in Dambulla had died while on his way to report from one camp to another and he had being taking medication for epilepsy

Also, the Army commander said that the post mortem report of the solider is yet to be produced. (Colombo/May6/2020)
