ECONOMYNEXT – Some 80 percent of private bus drivers that operate in Colombo and its suburbs drive under the influence of narcotics, State Minister Dilum Amunugama said.
The State Minister of Vehicle Regulation and Bus Transport Services told reporters yesterday that, to mitigate this, the government plans to introduce a drug test for heavy vehicle driver’s license applicants.
“This is a serious problem. We’re going to propose a drug test to the cabinet of ministers in this regard,” he said.
License applicants for heavy vehicle driving will be tested for any drugs in their system going back one month from the date of the test, Amunugama said.
“The person being tested may be a drug user, but if they haven’t used drugs for a month, we can rule out addiction since an addict can’t go even a week without it,” he added. (Colombo/Apr13/2021)
