Anti-Rabies vaccines among China’s RS.650 mln medicine donation to Sri Lanka

ECONOMYNEXT – China has donated medicines worth of 650 million rupees to Sri Lanka including 270,000 doses of anti-rabies vaccines under a 500 million RMB (Renminbi) emergency humanitarian assistance, Colombo-based Chinese Embassy said.

China International Development Cooperation Agency consignment has departed Chengdu and is expected to reach Colombo this evening, it said in its official Twitter platform.

The consignment included medicines like anti-rabies vaccines which have run out of stock due to forex shortage in the island nation amid an unprecedented economic crisis.

Sri Lanka’s health sector is facing a dire situation with 92 essential drugs out of 383 are short in supply. Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella however ensured that the shortage is not overwhelmingly alarming and can be managed with the use of substitutes, though state-run hospitals have been asking the public to bring some of the key medicines due to shortage.
