Artist Thenuwara attempts to highlight dysfunctional politics through “M.O.B.”
An event to highlight dysfunctional politics through art was held yesterday at the Saskia Fernando Gallery in Colombo.
The event features the works of renowned artist, activist, lecturer and curator, Professor Chandraguptha Thenuwara.
Professor Thenuwara’s annual exhibitions confront the current political atmosphere; Thenuwara’s art has had witty political commentary for nearly two decades in this format.
The Juxtaposition of certain objects and comical paronomasia is exhibited through Thenuwara’s work during a time when Sri Lanka’s freedom of speech is strongly inhibited.
The artist moves from Fibre Glass Cast, Glitch, and Sworn in Properly/Improperly Barrelism to Camouflage, Neo-Barrelism, Thorns and Lotuses.
The “Sworn in Properly/Improperly” is a satirical work of art on the constitutional crisis last October, with one image on the proper side and the other, Improper.
The exhibition will continue until the 13th of August 2019 from 10am – 6pm.
