ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka stationery manufacturer Atlas and voluntary movement Sarvodaya Shramadana joined hands to raise $1.5 million within three months to provide stationary to 100,000 underprivileged children in Sri Lanka to continue schooling.
The campaign is targeting to deliver essential learning tool packs for the 2023 school year for the all 100,000 children “who are most in danger of dropping out of school”.
The campaign titled “Light a Future” expects to reach over million global citizens connecting via the virtual platforms like websites, social media, and digital channels with a request from Sri Lankans living abroad as well as cooperates to join the noble cause.
“The support of influential corporates and individuals will be critical in reaching and mobilising charitable global communities and Sri Lankans living abroad to secure the necessary funds and create the desired impact,” the campaign organizers said in a statement.
“I’d like to request all of you to spare a thought for the less fortunate ones and charity is a characteristic of a greater human being,” Roshan Mahanama, a volunteer and a member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning cricket team said at the launch of the campaign.

Atlas, one of the two primary collaborative partners, is providing funds for 2500 children along with over 10,000 working hours of the company staff who would volunteer to dedicate their workforce for the generous cause.
“The one area that we have not touched on was education,” Kaushali Kusumapala, Project Lead at Light A Future campaign said adding that cooperates and individuals should come together to make the project a success.
Light a Future is focusing on three main age groups of preschool, primary and secondary, searching for and addressing their basic needs.
It will select beneficiaries from the families under the poverty line and vulnerable due to disturbed livelihood, female-led families, persons with disabilities, Samurdhi recipients, families of daily wage earners of affected small and medium entrepreneurs, and children of care homes.
At the beginning of the first term of the 2023, “Light a future” campaign will begin distributing their donations which includes a cluster of learning tools such as books, pencils, pens, color pencils, pastels, sharpers, erasers, rulers, glue, clay, scissors, water bottle, lunch box and a mathematical instrument box for secondary class students.
“This is as a ‘light to future’ we do not only seek donations from cooperates….to pursue partners who can connect us to the global community and bring this message to the global and we’ll raise the funds to this project,” Dr.Kamal Gamage, Finance Director of Sarvodaya told the gathering at the launch.
Ernst & Young (EY) is the auditing partner of the initiative who is enrolled to provide accountability and transparency to the end of the program, while Hemas Holdings and Sunshine Holdings also will contribute to the fund raising program, the campaign organizers said. (Colombo/Sept14/2022)
