Azath Salley arrested and detained under PTA and ICCPR – AG’s Dept.
ECONOMYNEXT – Former Governor of the Western Province Azath Salley has been arrested on the orders of the Attorney General, the AG’s spokeswoman said.
Salley also confirmed the news saying “I have been arrested at Kollupitiya,” in a Social Media post.
The spokeswoman for the AG’s department Nishara Jayaratne said the AG has advised the DIG CID that “credible information has been disclosed of offences committed under the Penal Code, the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act (ICCPR) by Azath Sally former Governor of the Western Province in a speech delivered by him on March 10.”
A CID team led by an Assistant Superintendent has been conducting investigations into the speech allegedly made by the senior political figure since last week.
Sally is the leader of the National Unity Front and had allegedly stated that Muslim Law cannot be changed and that his community will only respect these laws and none other.
This prompted Public Security Minister Admiral (Rtd) Sarath Weerasekere to demand his arrest as it was a statement that supported religious extremism.
Salley went to the Cinnamon Gardens Police station last week and gave a voluntary statement to Police.
Before that, the main Opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya criticized Salley for his comments.
SJB MP Gayantha Karunatilleke was quoted by the media as saying Salley’s remarks that Muslims will only respect the Sharia Law and Quran and other laws in the country is not relevant to them needs condemnation and cannot be supported.
The SJB also condemned the remarks made by a Cabinet Minister that temporal law is a personal law. (Colombo, March 16, 2021)
