ECONOMYNEXT – Former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and his brother Riyaj who were arrested last Saturday (24) in connection with the 2019 Easter bombings will be detained for 90 days, Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Rohana said in a statement this morning (27) that the Baithudeens will be detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The police spokesman said the two men were initially questioned under a 72-hour detention order obtained by the CID under the provisions of Article 6(1) of the controversial PTA. Based on a request made by the CID, a 90-day detention order was subsequently obtained as per Article 9(1) of the PTA for further questioning.

The brothers were arrested for aiding and abetting and for maintaining connections with the attackers, according to Rohana.

The arrests were made based on direct and scientific evidence, he said on Saturday. (Colombo/Apr27/2021)
