Brandix Covid cluster reaches 707 patients as police clarify curfew areas – officials
ECONOMYNEXT – Police headquarters has issued a clarification saying that Quarantine Curfews have been declared in the Gampaha, Divulapitiya, Minuwangoda and Veyangoda police areas as of 6 pm on October 6, 2020 as the total number of Covid positive cases from the Brandix cluster reached 707.
In a statement signed by the Acting Inspector-General of Police Chandana Wickremeratne the police said under quarantine regulations no person is permitted to leave their homes during the curfew which will be in force until further notice.
Long distance buses and trains may travel through these areas but cannot drop off or pick up passengers.
Meanwhile the number of cases from the cluster centred around the Brandix Apparel plant in Minuwangoda continues to increase with another 139 new cases reported a short while ago bringing the total to 707, a spokesman for the National Task force on Covid Prevention told EconomyNext.
Colonel Media of the Sri Lanka Army Vijitha Hettiarachchi said this means the total number of persons diagnosed with Covid 19 in Sri Lanka has breached the 4,000 mark.
Some of the positive cases have been detected outside of the Gampaha areas as workers who had traveled home for the long weekend were tested positive in places such as Moneragala, Kurunegala, Jaffna etc.
The Brandix facility has around 1,200 staff with residential facilities.
Hettiarachchi said medical personnel had carried out around 2,000 PCR tests in the past 48 hours. (Colombo, October 6, 2020)
