CAA announces maximum retail price for rice
Issuing an extraordinary gazette yesterday, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) announced Maximum Retail Prices (MRPs) on varieties of rice with effect from December 19.
This was in response to a directive made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
“President Rajapaksa has directed the CAA that immediate steps be taken to enforce the declared MRPs and ensure uninterrupted market supply of essential goods during this festive season which times consumers are vulnerable to market manipulation,” the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
The MRP has been announced for white and red Samba and white and red Nadu varieties, as follows:
- White/red Samba (steamed/boiled) – Rs 98 per kg (excluding Keeri Samba and Suduru Samba)
- White/red Nadu (steamed /boiled) – Rs 98 per kg (excluding Mottaikarupan and Attakari)
Under the powers vested in it by Section 20(5) of the CAA Act, No. 09 of 2003, the Consumer Affairs Authority orders that no producer, distributor or trader shall sell, expose or offer for sale or display for sale the following varieties of rice above the Maximum Retail Prices given, the Gazette said.
