Cabinet approves the ban on import of chainsaws
The Cabinet has approved the proposal to ban the import of chainsaws with the intention of preventing deforestation.
In order to take the necessary actions under the import-export control act no 1 of 1969 the proposal was made by President Maithripala Sirisena as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment.
Accordingly, the ban was imposed as it was identified that chainsaws can be easily used for illegal felling of trees which is the main reason for deforestation.
The government plans by imposing the ban to increase forestation on the island to 32 per cent of the island’s total area by 2030 from the current area of 29.7 per cent.
Currently, 82,000 chainsaws are registered under the ministry.
