Cabinet paper proposing ministers’, president’s staff confirmation withdrawn
A cabinet paper proposing confirmation of appointments made to various ministers’ and the president’s personal staff was withdrawn a short while ago.
The proposal had reportedly been submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena and Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena, calling for the confirmation of staff appointments to a number of ministers, non cabinet ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers as well as the President’s personal staff.
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) had earlier today urgently requested the Election Commission Chairman to intervene and halt the confirmation process.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, in a letter written to Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshpriya noted that the appointments were based on political loyalty and is a “clear violation” of election laws.
