Cabinet to ban oil palm cultivation

The Cabinet has decided to uphold a recent decision by the previous government to ban oil palm cultivation in Sri Lanka, citing environmental impact.

The decision to ban had originally been taken at the Cabinet meeting held on 11 November, in the week leading up to the presidential election.

Galle District Secretary Somarathna Widanapathirana told RepublicNext today that opposition was raised against oil palm cultivation by environmentalists and members of the public.

“The Cabinet has decided to ban new cultivation of palm oil. There is some news circulating that the ban will only be enforced in the Galle district, but that is false. The Cabinet has decided to ban new oil palm cultivations in the whole country due to its adverse impact on the environment,” Widanapathirana said.
