Cambodia eyeing salt imports from Sri Lanka: report

ECONOMYNEXT – Cambodia is looking the possibility of importing salt from Sri Lanka and India after heavy rains hit domestic production, a media report said.

Cambodia may need to import up to 30,000 tonnes of salt this year the Phnom Pen Post newspaper said.

The annual salt demand is about 90,000 tonnes.

The price of salt in Cambodia had risen about 2000 from a year earlier riel to 17,000 riel (4.25 US dollar) for 50 kilograms (about Rs 13.45 a kilo).

Cambodia has made inquiries from Sri Lanka, China and India to import salt, the report said. (Colombo/May25/2018)
