Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga received the 2019 Common Ground Award at the House of Lords in London, last Monday (17) which is awarded by the non-profit organization Search for Common Ground in the UK.
The organization gave the award to the former President in recognition of her vision, courage and commitment to peace and reconciliation.
Addressing the award ceremony, Kumaratunga dedicated her award to ‘the hundreds and thousands who are the unsung heroes of the struggle for peace, understanding amongst all beings.’
The event saw the participation of Noor al-Hussein, the dowager Queen of Jordan and the chairwoman of Search for Common Ground UK who commended former President for her efforts in peacebuilding, reconciliation and commitment to democracy.
Former US President Jimmy Carter and former President of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbayava are among the past winners of the award.
