Chandrika joins Sajith
Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will join Sajith Premadasa’s campaign for the Presidency tomorrow, the United National Front announced today.
Kumaratunga has not been happy with the decision by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party deciding to back the candidacy of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
She and another senior SLFP leader MP Kumara Welgama are opposed to the move. It is not clear whether Welgama will also be joining the United National Front which is backing the Democratic National Front coalition from which front Premadasa is contesting this election.
This confirms the split within the SLFP, with the “official” party backing the SLPP and others Premadasa.
There are reports that some of the lower-ranks in the SLFP will also work for Premadasa.
The current Acting Chairman of the Party Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told RepublicNext that Kumaratunga very little support. “She got only 4 votes in the last Local Government election in the Attanagalle area which has been the home seat of the Bandaranaike’s for generations” he pointed out.
