China catching up on India as Sri Lanka’s biggest tourism market
ECONOMYNEXT – Tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka rose 24.3 percent to 194,280 in January 2016 from a year ago with India remaining the biggest source market but China catching up having the fastest growth rate, tourism office statistics show.
The island received just below 1.8 million tourists in 2015.
The number of arrivals from India grew 26 percent to 28,895 in January 2016 from a year ago while that from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, shot up 122 percent to 26,083.
Russian arrivals fell almost 10 percent to 8,358 but there was strong growth in tourist arrivals from the Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
The United Kingdom remained the biggest traditional tourism market with the number of visitors rising 21 percent to 16,253 in January 2016 from a year ago while those from Germany grew 23 percent to 12,760.
