CID probing “false” Social Media posts of people dying by the wayside of COVID
ECONOMYNEXT – The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is probing the instances where there were postings on social media showing people purportedly dying by the wayside of the Covid 19 virus, the Police Media Division said.
The Police Media spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana was quoted as saying that detectives were probing “those who had posted falsehoods” on social media.
Several instances where people appeared to have died while on the streets were posted and widely shared.
Police in Panadura reported that a man who had come to the town to purchase supplies had collapsed on the streets and passers-by had taken him to hospital and he had passed away on admission.
They added that a postmortem examination was being done to determine the cause of death.
The Deputy Director of the Medical Research Institute Dr Jayaruwan Bandara in a video released to media said that it is possible that a person with either heart disease or some other conditions passes away while on the streets.
“However we cannot conclude that he or she has died of Covid 19 because a Medical Investigation needs to find the true cause of death,” he said.
“Until a proper examination is done to ascertain the cause of death we have to look at the death with an open mind,” Bandara said. (Colombo, November 13, 2020)
