CID questioning Rishad’s brother: police

BLAST EFFECT: Easter Sunday blasts by Islamist extremists generated widespread sympathy in the West giving Sri Lanka breathing space to follow better policy – if it wants to.

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently questioning former minister Rishad Bathuideen’s brother and another suspect who were arrested last night over last year’s Easter Sunday attacks, police said.

The two suspects were arrested in Puttalam last night by a special investigation team of the CID appointed to investigate the April 2019 attacks.

The suspects are in the ages 40, 41 and are residents of Puttalam.

Last month, acting IGP C D Wickramaratne instructed the CID to conclude the investigations into the Easter attack quickly. He even went to the extent of changing the officers assigned as per instructions given to him by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Also last month, the CID was able to arrest the main suspect who had transported and handled the suicide bomber who blew himself up at the Zion church in Batticaloa

The suspected was a resident of Mount Lavinia.

The Easter bombings killed 259 people including 45 foreign nationals and injured at least 500. Attacks were carried out in a number of churches and hotels around the country. Investigators ruled that a local militant Islamic outfit named the National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ) with suspected ties to the Islamic State had carried out the attacks. (Colombo/Apr15/2020)
