CMEV probing missing names in electoral lists

Election watchdog the Center for Monitoring Election Violence is investigating claims by residents of Colombo that local officials have crossed their names off electoral lists effectively denying them the vote at the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

RepublicNext first published the complaints made by Shewantha and Savithri Rodrigo who took to Social Media last week to air this issue.

After their posts and our report, many others began relating similar experiences.

Researcher Malathie Knight posted this on her Facebook page/Facebook

Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) is taking these posting seriously and have appointed two investigators to gather more information.

“We are investigating in the Colombo District at present,” the National Coordinator for CMEV Manjula Gajanayake told RepublicNext.

“We have already sent two groups of people to Dehiwala and the Central Colombo area to investigate the situation,” he said.

He added that Right to Information (RTI) requests will be sent to the Colombo District Elections Office tomorrow.  and after CMEV receives the response from the public, CMEV then file a Supreme Court case

CMEV is contemplating legal action after all the information is gathered.

“Disciplinary action will be taken if Grama Sevakas are at fault for what has happened” Gajanayake said.
