ECONOMYNEXT – Compensation letters and salaries due amounting to 30 million rupees paid by employers of deceased migrant workers have been handed over to their families, the foreign ministry said.
These and other redresses were formally handed over to the families at a ceremony marking International Workers Day and International Day of Family Remittances on June 16, the ministry said.
Minister Dinesh Guanawardena was quoted as saying that although the loss of a person’s life is irreparable, compensation payments on behalf of the deceased workers would bring some kind of relief to affected family members.
The Foreign Ministry said it was able to secure the compensation and salaries due with the assistance of the Sri Lanka missions in Middle Eastern countries.
“These payments were a result of initiatives and constant follow up action pursued by the relevant Sri Lankan Missions liaising with the respective authorities of the specific country,” it said. (Colombo/June16/2021)
