Confusion as Sri Lanka ministers get subjects
ECONOMYNEXT – President Maithripala Sirisena today announced the subjects he has allocated to ministers, but the distribution of functions has added more confusion to an already complex cabinet.
The Clutural Affairs Ministry gets the cultural affairs department as it should be, but the responsibility to maintain cultural heritage sites and managing the Central Cultural Fund, a cash cow, is allocated to the Education Ministry.
The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) has been removed from the Agricultural ministry and given to Rural Industries Ministry.
Considering that the PMB is now storing rice at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, it should have gone to the Transport Ministry.
However, the Transport ministry has been stripped of air transport, but left with the Civil Aviation Department. SriLankan Airlines and Mihin have been given to the ministry of state enterprises.
But, not all state enterprises have been given to the state enterprises ministry either. This ministry gets a few sugar plantations while Hingurana Sugar and Lanka Sugar goes to the Industries ministry. (Colombo/September 22 2015)
