Court of Appeal puts off Sri Lanka Cricket elections
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal Wednesday suspended cricket board elections for two weeks pending a decision on the suitability of Thilanga Sumathipala to seek re-election.
The court gave the order following a petition filed by Nishantha Ranatunga who unsuccessfully challenge Sumathipala at the january 2016 elections for the presidency.
The court issued a stay order on the elections till June 14, an official said. Ranatunga alleges that Sumathipala is in violation of International Cricket Council regulations by holding office despite his alleged links to gambling.
Sumathipala acknowledges that his family is involved in gaming, but says he has nothing to do with the family business and he is not in breach of the ICC code of conduct. (COLOMBO, May 30, 2018)
