COVID 19: More patients cured and discharged than warded in hospitals
ECONOMYNEXT – For the first time the number of COVID 19 patients who have been cured and discharged from hospital has exceeded the number of patients receiving treatment for the virus in state-run hospitals, the government said.
Two more people were diagnosed today with the virus bringing the total number of patients infected in Sri Lanka since the outbreak to 937.
As of today there are 408 warded in hospitals with COVID 19 and the total number who have recovered and discharged is 520.
Both patients detected today are from within quarantine centres. One is from the Meeyankulama centre and the other had recently returned from Chennai and was quarantined at the Kandakadu centre, the Director-General of Health Services Dr Anil Jasinghe said.
The country experienced a surge in the number of COVID 19 positive patients from April 22 to May 6 as the virus spread rapidly inside the Welisara Naval base.
In all 534 Navy personnel and their close associates contracted the disease. The base has been shut down and is in quarantine. (Colombo, May 16, 2020)
