COVID 19 : New Guidelines for curfew passes issued
ECONOMYNEXT – Police headquarters has issued new guidelines for the issuance of Curfew passes granting more public and private sector institutions leeway to re-open for business.
Senior officials told EconomyNext that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had instructed officials to bring some order into the issuance of the permits as there was a need to allow some economic activity to resume.
He also had said the crowding of people wanting curfew permits at local police stations was defeating the purpose of the curfew which was to enforce social distancing.
Thereafter acting police chief Chandara Wickremaratne had put together a team to draw up the new regulations, this official said.
Under the new regulations companies and public sector institutions have however been warned not to bring in un-necessary staff and ensure that the curfew passes are not abused.
“Any abuse of the passes will be punished under the law,” the announcement by Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickremeratne issued Tuesday night said.
The issuing of curfew passes for companies that have more than 50 employees will be done at Police Headquarters for the Colombo district while DIGs in other divisions will be empowered to do so at the district level.
The curfew passes for institutions employing more than ten and less than 50 employees will be issued by the respective SSP Divisions and institutions with less than ten employees by the local Police stations.
Local police stations will also issue permits on humanitarian grounds, the Acting IG said.
One of the reasons for the new guidelines has been to reduce the crowding at the local police stations, a separate announcement from the Presidential Secretariat said.
In a statement signed by the President’s media spokesman Mohan Samaranayake this week until Friday 10th has been declared a work from home week the Secretariat reminded all government and private-sector workers.
