Covid 19 update: Minuwangoda cluster numbers go up to 321 all garment workers
ECONOMYNEXT – The number of Covid 19 positive cases detected at the Brandix plant at Minuwangoda has risen to 321 with 220 new patients added overnight, Army Commander Lt Gen Shavendra Silva has said.
The Army Chief who also heads the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of Covid 19 (NOCPOC) said tests are on-going in the factory that has over 1,200 full-time staff.
Out of the 220, the Medical Research Institute reported 48 cases as positive and the IDH lab 172. All are personnel from the Brandix plant.
Other officials said the count of the Covid 19 patients in this cluster are likely to go up further.
Medical personnel have conducted thousands of PCR tests in the Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya and Veyangoda areas over the past 24 hours.
As some of the Brandix staff had gone home on holidays during the long weekend cases have been detected in a number of cities and towns across the country.
Cases have been reported from Jaffna, Kurunegala, Monaragala, Katana Seeduwa, Divulapitiya, Meerigama, Jaela and Mahara.
Quarantine curfews which were upgraded to Police Curfews this afternoon are in force in the Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya and Veyangoda Police divisions after a community outbreak of Covid 19 was confirmed late Saturday night.
The first person discovered with the infection is a 39-year old Supervisor in the Brandix plant a mother of three children. Her oldest child, a 16-year-old girl has tested positive although her husband and the younger children are negative. (Colombo October 6, 2020)
