Curfew in Sri Lanka’s Negombo lifted; social media blocked

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Negombo town is calm following overnight unrest and dusk-to-dawn curfew has ended at 7.00 am, police said, while authorities have re-imposed a block on social media platforms.

Police spokesman Nuwan Gunasekera said Negombo was calm and curfew had ended at 7.00 am.

The unrest was sparked off when an argument had started between a three wheeler driver and a pedestrian, he said.

An intoxicated person had intervened and there had been an escalation of the conflict.

The situation was borught under control and curfew was imposed to prevent further incidents, he said.

Authorities have blocked social media platforms like Facebook and Whatsapp.

Sri Lanka blocked social media soon after the Easter Sunday bombings and was only unblocked last week. One of three churches bombed on Easter Sunday is located in Negombo. (Colombo/May07/2019-SB)
