Cyclone ‘FANI’ departs, strong winds and heavy rain continue

The “severe” cyclonic storm ‘FANI’ is moving away from Sri Lanka towards Odisha on the Indian coast, the Department of Metrology said today (02).

‘FANI’ is currently located about 750 km northeast of Jaffna.

However, strong winds and showers are expected to continue over the island and surrounding seas.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western, Uva and North-western provinces, as well as Mannar district.

Strong winds up to 60 km/h are expected over the island, particularly in the central hills, Northern, North Central, Uva and Southern provinces. Winds are also expected in the Puttalam, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.

The Med Department has also issued an advisory for high waves in the seas extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle.

The department urges the public, naval bodies and fishing communities to pay close attention to any future advisories.
