Death toll revised down to 253
A statement sent out on Thursday night by the Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe has revised the death toll from the Easter Sunday massacre from an estimated 359 to approximately 253.
In the statement Dr. Jasinghe has said that the reason for the revision is that many bodies have been dismembered by the violence of the blast.
Bringing the parts of the bodies together to assemble cadavers has been a difficult task Dr Jasinghe said.
A careful revision of the bodies that have been claimed and the remains that are still unclaimed have led the authorities to make this statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the number of foreigners dead is 40. Sixteen bodies believed to be those of foreigners remain unclaimed at the Colombo Judicial Mortuary.
Earlier the Health authorities had estimated the death toll at 280.
