President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Air Marshall D. L. S. Dias as the 17th Commander of the Air Force.
Air Marshall Dias was sworn in before the President at the Presidential Secretariat earlier today (29).
He joined the Sri Lanka Air Force on 13 December 1984 as an Officer Cadet in the General Duties Pilot Branch in the 13th Officer Cadet intake.
Air Marshal Dias completed his Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College in India in 2001 and completed National Defence Course in Mirpur, Bangladesh.
He has also completed the Junior Command and Staff Course in India, Joint Air Warfare Course at IAF India and Air Craft Accident Investigation Course in Pakistan.
Dias is a recipient of the Desha Puthra Sammanaya, as a result of injuries he sustained due to enemy fire over Silawathuriai during offensive combat air operations in Eelam War II during 1990-1995.
Air Marshal Dias was appointed Chief of Staff of the Air Force from 01 October 2016 until he was appointed as the 17th Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
Meanwhile, President Sirisena has also promoted Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy the former Air Force Commander to the four-star rank of Air Chief Marshal with effect from yesterday (28)
Air Chief Marshal Kapila Jayampathy took over as the 16th Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force on 12 September 2016.
