DIG convicted of corruption and released on bail

Former Deputy Inspector General of Police Hector Dharmasiri was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to three years jail and a Rs 300,000 fine by the Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne on Tuesday (02).

The Court found Dharmasiri guilty of illegally utilizing personnel from the Civil Defense Service as free labour to construct his private residence.

At the time he was the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Matale Division.

After the sentencing Dharmasiri’s lawyers told court they would appeal the sentence and asked for bail.

The Magistrate granted bail on a Rs 300,000 surety.
