Dimuth to lead SL in Cricket World Cup
Dimuth Karunaratne has deposed Lasith Malinga as the ODI captain of the Sri Lankan team.
The announcement by Sri Lanka Cricket appointing opening batsman Karunaratne as skipper was made last night.
SLC is due to announce the final World Cup squad today at 2pm.
This raises questions about the participation of fast bowler Lasith Malinga who is reported to have said that he would quit if he was removed as captain.
There were some issues with Karunaratne being appointed to captain after he met with an accident some weeks ago and was found to be driving under the influence.
Karunarathna last played an ODI in the last edition of the tournament in 2015 and has only played 17 ODIs all told. He averages 15.83 with a high score of 60. His overall List A numbers are credible, with an average 34.34 from 120 games, including six centuries.
The left-hander made waves in Test cricket in recent times, earning selection in the ICC’s Test Team of the Year 2018, and captained Sri Lanka to a historic Test series whitewash in South Africa earlier this year, standing in for Dinesh Chandimal.
According to the statement, Karunaratne’s appointment was ratified by sports minister Harin Fernando.
