The Sri Lanka Navy had apprehended the suspects off the Mirissa coast last Thursday January 05 while transporting the haul of heroin, carefully concealed in a multiday fishing trawler, police said in a statement on Saturday January 07.
The five suspects are between 33 and 42 years of age and are residents of Mirissa, Kamburugamuwa and Pitigala areas in the Matara district.
Upon being produced in the Colombo magistrate court on Friday, an order had been obtained permitting the detention of the suspects for a period of seven days while the Police Narcotics Bureau conducted further investigations, the police statement said. (Colombo/Jan07/2023)
