Eknaligoda disappearance trial to begin Feb 20
The trial of 10 Military Intelligence officers over the alleged enforced disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda will begin on February 20, the three-member Colombo Special Trial-at-Bar decided today Dec 18.
This will be ten years after Eknaligoda disappeared.
The Judges, in this case, are Justices Sampath Abeykoon, Sampath Wijeratne and Gehan Kulatunga.
The Commanding officer of the Giritale Army Camp Lt Colonel Shammi Kumararatne and nine other Intelligence Officers have been indicted in this case by the Attorney General.
The witnesses for the prosecution are Eknaligoda’s wife Sandhya Eknaligoda, Media professional Nandana Weeraratne and Suresh Kumar alias Murali who is said to be an ex-LTTE cadre. Summons were issued to these witnesses to appear in court by the judges today.
Eknaligoda, a political writer, cartoonist and activist disappeared in 2010 shortly before the Presidential election of that year. Since then his wife has waged a relentless campaign for justice.
In 2017 she was given the International Woman of Courage Award by the US State Department.
