Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa made a cash deposit at the Elections Commission a short while ago as an independent presidential candidate, a Sri Lanka Podujuna Peramuna (SLPP) source confirmed.
The deposit was made against the backdrop of his brother and SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s candidacy at the coming presidential election hangs in the balance, pending a court ruling over his disputed citizenship.
Joint Opposition MP Anura Pridyarhana Yapa, who had initially denied the report, told RepublicNext that he was later informed of the former speaker’s entry to the presidential race.
Yapa also expressed hope that the courts will rule in Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s favour. The decision is due at 6pm today.
