Fire at Sri Lanka Brandix export apparel factory

COLOMBO (EconomyNex) – A factory belonging to Sri Lanka’s Brandix apparel group had caught fire early on Monday, while it was closed for traditional New Year holidays, the investment promotion ministry said.

The factory was in Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment export processing zone in Katunayake.

The fire-fighting units at the BOI, Sri Lanka Air Force and the airport had responded and the blaze had not spread to other factories.

Police spokesman said Ruwan Gunasekera said one of the buildings in the factory complex had caught fire and firemen was still fighting the blaze by 11.20 Sri Lanka time, though it was now under control.

He said the cost of the damage was not yet known.

Investment Promotions Minister Kabir Hashim had been in touch with the owners the statement said. Brandix is one of two top apparel export companies in Sri Lanka.
