Five dead, four injured due to heavy showers
Five people died and four others sustained injuries in adverse weather conditions across the island yesterday, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
According to the DMC’s situation report released this morning, four of the deaths were reported from Batticaloa and the other occurred in Mannar.
The DMC noted that 171 families were affected by heavy rains, with a total of 608 people affected in the Kandy, Moneragala, Batticaloa, Ampara, Mannar, Kalutura, Hambantota, Kegalle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Some 55 residences have sustained partial damages, according to the DMC, and 203 people from 61 families have been relocated.
The Department of Meteorology, meanwhile, stated that showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, Eastern, North-Central and Uva provinces today after 1: 00 pm.
“Heavy showers about 100-150mm are expected particularly in the Batticaloa, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Badulla and Trincomalee districts and fairly heavily showers about 75-100 mm are expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Central and Southern province,” the Met Department added.
