Flood warning for Kelani River near Sri Lankan capital Colombo
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has issued a flood warning to residents of low lying areas on the Kelani River, which runs north of the capital Colombo, after several days of heavy rains.
The island has suffered several floods in recent years that disrupted transport, industrial production and cultivation, slowing down economic growth.
Water levels at three monitoring stations on the Kelani River had exceeded the alert level but were below minor flood level, the disaster management office said, citing Irrigation Department reports.
It said the Attanagalu river, north of the Kelani, had reached minor flood level, and advised residents of several localities there to remain alert and ready to evacuate if necessary.
The meteorology department has forecast showers to continue with fairly heavy rains of 50 -100mm having occurred in parts of the two river catchment areas.
