Floods displace 54,000 in Sri Lanka, 13 dead
ECONOMYNEXT – Torrential rains in Sri Lanka has killed 13 people and 54,000 people had been shifted to safer areas, the country’s disaster management authorities said.
Lightening had killed four people, five had drowned and falling trees had killed two others.
As of 1200 noon 125,954 people had been hit by the floods, with 54,205 in shelters.
Gampaha in the Western province had been hardest hit with 42,973 people affected and 33,832 in shelters.
In Ratnapura, Sabaragamuwa province, where flooding is an annual phenomenon, 28,328 had been affected and 621 were in shelters.
More thundershowers have been forecast for May 24, in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Central provinces and in Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Galle and Matara districts. (Colombo/May24/2018)
