FMM concerned about Police Media closure
The Free Media Movement (FMM) is expressing concern about the abrupt closure of the Police Media unit without the introduction of an alternative for Media to obtain information from the Police.
In a press release issued this evening, Nov 29, the Media Watchdog said that the right of journalists and through them for citizens to be informed about incidents that impact on their lives has been violated. By closing down the Police Media unit this right has been blocked, it added.
“This violates the principles of a democratic political culture which is being promoted by the authorities,” it said.
The FMM also said the summoning and questioning of two journalists by the Criminal Investigation Department is also a matter of concern.
“As reported to us, Dhanushka Sanjaya, a journalist of The Leader.lk website and Thushara Vitharana, a journalist of Voice Tube were summoned by police for interrogation,” it said.
Both journalists have been since released.
