The Navy arrested four Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters yesterday (25 July).
Navy personnel had arrested the suspects during a patrol carried out in the country’s Northern seas, in the vicinity of the Kovalam Lighthouse.
The Navy has also seized a fishing trawler along with the fishermen. The fishermen and their equipment are now in Navy custody at the SLNS Elara naval base.
Following a medical test, the Navy said, the fishermen are due to be handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna for onward legal action.
