ECONOMYNEXT – At least four people have reportedly died after Prison officials opened fire after inmates at the Mahara Prison became restive after a large number of them tested positive for the Covid 19 virus officials and activists said.
Media reported that 22 injured inmates and four dead were brought to the Ragama hospital today after the incidents at the jail which houses around 2000 inmates.
“The restive situation began after prisoners protested about some hundred inmates who have tested Covid positive were kept in the prison,” Senaka Perera Chairman of the Committee for Prisoners rights told EconomyNext.
“This type of tensions are rising in jails across the country,” he warned.
Reporters on the scene said that flames were rising from the building at the police Special Task Force had been called in.
Calls to Prison spokesmen as well as the Commissioner-General Thushara Upuldeniya went unanswered. (Colombo November 29, 2020)
