Gota petition dismissed; Pohottuwa “very happy”
A three-judge bench of the Court of Appeal unanimously dismissed a short while ago the writ petition challenging presidential hopeful Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s citizenship.
The dismissal clears the way for Rajapaksa to contest the upcoming presidential election representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Commenting on the victory, Joint Opposition MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told RepublicNext that their candidate has been vindicated by the verdict.
“This is what we always said. There was no case. The right decision has been arrived at by the three-bench Appeal Court judges,” he said.
“We have always maintained that it was a useless case. There was no basis to it. I think our lawyers have studied it and argued it very well. We’re very happy,” he added.
The SLPP will now hand over Rajapaksa’s nomination papers, said Yapa, and would recommence its election campaign.
