Govt guarantees price control for rice, but no such luck for vegetable prices
Co-Government Spokesman and State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage offered a guarantee yesterday that the government will be able to control the price of rice in two weeks’ time, adding however that nothing can be done with regard to vegetable prices.
Insisting that the biggest and only problem faced by the people is the sudden increase in the price of rice and vegetables, Aluthgamage said the government is already expecting a big harvest from the Eastern Province once paddy harvesting begins there in two weeks.
The government, therefore, will definitely be able to control prices with the new harvest coming in, he said, cautioning again, however, that the government cannot control vegetable prices that went up following the recent floods.
The government does not want to import vegetables or rice in order to control prices as it would be unfair to farmers who are expecting a big harvest this time, the state minister added.
