High Court to decide on bail for Pujith and Hemasiri
The Colombo High Court will consider a Revision application filed by the Attorney General challenging the decision by Colombo’s Chief Magistrate to grant bail to former Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Hemasiri Fernando and Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundera tomorrow July 23.
The AG had charged Fernando and Jayasundera with murder, along with several other charges, in the Easter Sunday Attacks which killed more than 200 people.
Colombo’s Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne granted bail to the two officials disputing whether they could be charged with murder.
The AG has challenged that and wants bail revoked and the officials re-arrested.
Meanwhile, the Police informed the Magistrate that they have concluded their questioning of Fernando and will record a final statement from Jayasundera shortly.
The AG’s actions are based on the findings of a Board of Inquiry which was headed by Supreme Court Judge Vijith Malalgoda which inquired into commissions and omissions surrounding the Easter attacks.
Magistrate Jayaratne challenged the AG’s contention that the findings in the inquiry were enough to charge the men.
The Magisterial enquiry is postponed to October 3.
