ECONOMYNEXT – The four young men who brazenly stuck their torsos out of a moving vehicle on the southern expressway last Saturday (10) were taken into custody this morning, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, who was arrested yesterday, will be in remand custody till April 22, police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said. All five suspects are residents of Akurana, he added.
Footage of the incident went viral on social media over the weekend and was widely condemned. Traffic on Sri Lanka’s expressways generally moves at 80 to 100kmph.
Rohana said in a statement today that a statement has been recorded from the original, registered owner of the Toyota Aqua, who had sold it prior to the incident. The police spokesman said this transaction had not been performed according to the law, and as a result, the registered owner too will be charged by the expressway police division.
A statement from the new owner too is to be recorded in due course, said Rohana, adding that further investigations are under way.
Police statistics show that Sri Lanka records around 3,000 fatalities due to traffic accidents every year. (Colombo/Apr13/2021)
